Written for Introductory Sociology and Sociology of Popular Music courses, this book uses popular music to illustrate fundamental social institutions, theories, sociological concepts, and processes. The authors use music, a social phenomenon of great interest, to draw students in and bring life to their study of social life. The Good Drone: How Social Movements Democratize Surveillance (MIT Press), by Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick, demonstrates that this technology – which is mostly associated with covert surveillance and remote warfare – has also served as a vital tool for activists, social movements, and defenders of human rights to effect pro-social campaigns.

Whose Music? combines historical, musicological, and sociological materials and styles of analysis in ways that connect to the field of sociology. The analyses of social class systems presented here speak in translatable ways to analyses of musical forms. Not only that, both are connected to an understanding of the organizations through which works are distributed to their audiences. This work addresses a need to provide a sociological foundation for understanding music education. The book outlines some concepts in sociology and music education and then draws together theoretical insights with examples from practice with innovative applications of sociological theory to the field of music education.

Economy and Society: An Outline of Interpretive Sociology by Max Weber. Economy and Society has become a foundational text for modern sociology. Published in Germany in the early s, the book was dubbed, “the greatest sociological treatise written in this century.”.   But here, most often, the study of popular music exists at the margins of other studies - sociology, anthropology, history, American studies - and the people who do it fall through the cracks.''.
